Saturday's On Site Recap

By: Luke Devoe

#6 Hamden 6, #10 New Canaan 2
In a game that appeared, before the third, to be going back and forth all afternoon, Hamden delivered four definitive blows in the final 15 minutes.  The first period was choppy, with little flow and aside from a couple nice saves by New Canaan netminder Chris Koenneke, there wasn't much to write home about in the first.  The second saw a pair of goals sneak past Koenneke, both of which he probably wanted back.  On the first, Hamden sophomore Tyler Carangelo battled past a Rams defenseman, willed his way to the net and got a fortunate bounce after a goal mouth scramble which left the net dislodged, Koenneke on his back, and Ram fans calling for goalie interference.  With the paint still drying on that one, the Green Dragons would score again.  Senior captain Billy Reilly would use the goal line as his advantage, work hard down low, and put one past Koenneke just seven seconds after Carangelo's goal.  With the two quick goals, Rams coach Bo Hickey called a well placed timeout.  Just over 30 seconds later, senior standout Harry Stanton broke free, skated in alone on Hamden goalie Matt Hoff and roofed a backhander past him cutting the lead to 2-1 with a ton of time left in the second.     It appeared from my vantage point that Stanton also scored the game tying goal standing all alone for a tap in, but multiple media outlets are reporting that Peter Reinhardt scored the goal.  Regardless, the Rams tied the game, swung all the momentum in their favor and looked to have the Green Dragons on their heels.  Not so fast sweetheart!  It would take Hamden a little while to get going in the third but just over five minutes into the period, captain Reilly was at it again, this time on a partial breakaway of his own.  Reilly would come in, split the defenders between the circles and force one past Koenneke for the game winner.  The Dragons and Rams would go back and forth for a while before the flood gates would open with just under five to go thanks to stud sophomore defensemen Joe O'Connor.  The quick and long O'Connor's first goal would simply be a thing of power.  A blast from the point made the game 4-2, but his second goal was easily the prettiest of the day.  Beating a Ram defender through Koenneke's right circle, O'Connor would come in and roof a wrister through a key hole sized gap to beat Koenneke for his second goal of the game and second in under a minute.  Hamden's Dan Chicoine would seal the deal with a power play shot from the point making it 6-2.  Hamden asserted their dominance in this one outshooting the sputtering Rams 42-17.  With the win Hamden improves to (1-1-0) and the Rams fall to (0-2-0).
