The tournament got underway last night at different local rinks and while quite a few games turn into snooze tests, some were down right raucous. (1) Masuk cruised to an 11-3 win over (16) St. Bernard-NFA-Bacon behind a hat trick and five point night from junior Shane Dushay. Sophomore Brian Denham chipped in with 2 goals and 3 assists and junior Charlie Christo added on with a four point night. Masuk will go on to face (8) Staples-Weston-Shelton, a 6-2 winner over (9) Lyman Hall-HK. LHK was in the game early second period when Nick Baccaro scored on the power play to make it 2-1, but the Wreckers were able to physically wear down LHK in route to the rout. Junior Jack Mendillo and sophomore Ryan Johnson both had two goals on the night while senior Eric Zurmuehle added five assists for the Wreckers.
In one of the day's more competitive games, (13) Wethersfield gave (4) EO Smith-Tolland just about all they could handle at Uconn, but the Bucks were tough enough and held on to a 5-4 win. Bucks forward Pete Mayer had a hat trick on the day in the winning effort. The Bucks get (5) NFI who needed an extra, extra frame to top (12) Westhill 4-3 in the night's most exciting action.
(6) Housatonic-NW-Wamogo saw their season come to an end, when (11) Tri-Town upset them 2-0 after a brief power delay at Hotchkiss. Their win was the only "upset" at the D3 level last night. Tri-Town will face (3) Sheehan, a 6-4 winner over (14) Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug. Sal Gozzo notched a hat trick in this one while Colin Beaudoin and Dylan Beaudoin both added three points on the night. Shepaug's Andrew Loya had two goals and an assist in the loss.
(2) Newtown used three first period goals and took care of business in their opener beating (15) Joel Barlow 5-1 in Danbury. Dan Harrison potted two goals for the Nighthawks. They will take on (7) Hall-Southington, a 9-2 winner over (10) Woodstock Academy. This one was never really in doubt with Hall-South scoring 3 within the first few minutes of the game. They took a 5-0 lead into the first intermission and never looked back. Sophomore Jarod Florian notched a hat trick and added an assist in the victory while senior Kevin cop added two goals and two assists of his own.
I went 8 for 8 on my first round predictions. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, right? On the tab bar above you can see all three divisions worth of predictions but I'll consolidate it here for you. In the quarters I have Masuk over Staples, NFI over Bucks, Sheehan over Tri-Town and Newtown over Hall-South. These games will get underway Thursday, March 13 at neutral sites. When the CIAC posts sites and times, I will pass it along.
@CTHSHockey will be at the NIP tonight for a D2 state tournament double header featuring (12) North Branford @ (5) North Haven followed by (14) Fermi-Enfield @ (3) Branford. If you're there, come by and say hi!
