All-CTHSHockey DIII Team

By: Luke Devoe

The following players are recognized for exceptional seasons at the Division III level. Keep in mind these teams are based on regular season play not post season performance. Due to number of teams and the talent spread, I've decided to select a first and second team from DIII.

DIII Awards
Skater of the Year: BJ Richard, Sr. Newington-Berlin
Goalie of the Year: Cam Earle, Sr. BCR
Defensive Defenseman of the Year: Justin Pratte, Sr. Newington-Berlin
Offensive Defenseman of the Year: Ryan Kiernan, Sr. Sheehan
Freshman of the Year: Luca DiPaola, Newington-Berlin
Coach of the Year: Chris Stevenson, BCR
Ryan Brennan All Heart Award: Drew O'Leary & Hunter Blais, Newington-Berlin
Ryan Brennan All Heart Award given out each year to players at all three divisions. Brennan, a Fairfield Prep Jesuit lost a two year battle with cancer in February 2011. It was suggested by Prep players last season that we honor the life of Ryan with this annual award given out to players who exhibit excellence on and off the ice.

FIRST TEAM
F Kaden Batzinger, Sr. Lyman Hall-HK (FINALIST FOR D3 SKATER OF THE YEAR)
A 50 point senior season from Batzinger led Lyman Hall-HK and really kept them afloat in a year where the team struggled. Batzinger led DIII in goals with 30. Like the other three forwards on this team, Batzinger could've done this at any level and will surely be missed for LH-HK.
Newington-Berlin's BJ Richard

F BJ Richard, Sr. Newington-Berlin (FINALIST FOR D3 SKATER OF THE YEAR)
Richard led a potent Newington-Berlin team in points and helped lead them to back to back DIII championships. Richard finished with 43 points (22 G, 21 A) and was even featured as the number one play on Sportscenter's Top 10. One with the flair for the dramatic and flashy goals, Richard has been fun to watch for the past few seasons.

F Cody Albert, Sr. Sheehan (FINALIST FOR D3 SKATER OF THE YEAR)
Albert finished with 19 goals and Sheehan's go-to-guy this season. Sheehan relied heavily on Albert's heroics. His deft scoring touch allowed Sheehan to compete this season at a competitive level. Albert chipped in with 11 helpers on the year as well.

D Will Thompson, Sr. Hall-Southington
A stalwart and responsible defenseman, Thompson helped an offensive-oriented Hall-Southington team shock Newington-Berlin twice.

D Justin Pratte, Sr. Newington-Berlin
As reliable and dependable as they come, Pratte finished with 12 points on the year for the eventual state champions.

G Cam Earle, Sr. BCR (FINALIST FOR D3 GOALIE OF THE YEAR)
Earle dazzled this year and become somewhat of a cult hero for the defensive geared BCR team. Earle notched 9 shutouts on the year and finished with a ridiculous 0.87 goals against average.

SECOND TEAM
F Kyle Whalen, Sr. Rocky Hill-RHAM-Middletown (FINALIST FOR D3 SKATER OF THE YEAR)
Whalen set the all time program record for points while tallying 36 points on the season.  A do everything forward and one of the state's best distributors, Whalen carried a rebuilding and at times struggling RMR team on his back.

F Bailey Brown, Sr. New Fairfield-Immaculate
Brown tallied 23 goals for NFI this season while showing flash and defensive competence. NFI will struggle to reproduce his production next season.

F Shane Dushay, So. Masuk
An impressive sophomore campaign and the only underclassmen on the first two teams, Dushay notched 30 points (16 G, 14 A) this year. Masuk was a period away from shocking the state against Newington-Berlin and they got their because of efforts like Dushay's.

D Ryan Kiernan, Sr. Sheehan
Sheehan's Ryan Kiernan
One of the best offensive defensemen in the state, Kiernan finished his final season with 26 points and an impressive 14 goals.

D Jason Steele, Sr. NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon
Stalwart and strong, Steele gave NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon a presence on the back end that's hard to duplicate. Also chipped in on the offensive end with 10 points (5 G, 5 A).

G Drew O'Leary, Sr. Newington-Berlin (FINALIST FOR D3 GOALIE OF THE YEAR)
O'Leary could be considered a 1A to Earle's #1. O'Leary is one of the main reasons the Indians repeated and posted a shutout in his final high school hockey game. He posted 5 shutouts in the regular season and a solid 1.47 goals against average.

F J.R. Piritti, Sr. BCR
