Division 1 Second Team

The following players are recognized for exceptional seasons at the Division I level. Keep in mind these players are selected based on regular season play not post season performance. Due to number of teams and the talent spread, I've decided to select two teams of 3 Forwards, 2 Defensemen and 1 Goalie.  Check back tomorrow for DI's First Team.

Division I Second Team

F Matt Dumas, Sr. (Notre Dame-West Haven)
The heart and soul of the Knights this year. The captain was strong in all phases and at times electrified with his speed. He finished up the playoffs with multiple injuries but never slowed his played. Dumas posted 50 points (27 G, 23 A) this regular season.

F Ryan Lynch, Jr. (Notre Dame-West Haven)
Tough to split up the twins but Ryan was dominant for large stretches this year for the Green Knights. His top line of himself, brother Kyle and the aforementioned Dumas was arguably the state's best line. Lynch finished with 54 points (23 G, 31 A) on the year.

F Tommy Watters, Sr. (Darien)
On a team as evenly spread out in terms of points as any, it's hard for one guy to stand above the rest. Watters just may be that guy. Lightning speed paired with a complete, all around game lands Watters on this squad. He posted a 40 point (20 G, 20 A) senior season.

D Stephen Mettler, Sr. (New Canaan)
Mettler had a strong year for a quality Rams squad. His dependability and shear size on the blue line impressed. After a strong career at New Canaan, Mettler will move on to attend school at Yale University.

D Brendan Killoy, Jr. (Fairfield Prep)
One of the best stay at home defenseman in the state. Killoy will never fill up a score sheet (5 assists on the year) but like fellow D-men Billy Overby and Steven Bayles, Killoy does all the small things extremely well. One of a few key cogs in Prep's title run.

G Mike Colon, Sr. (Darien)
With a goals against average around 1, a resume´ that includes beating Fairfield Prep and NDWH twice each and seven shutouts on the season, senior Colon did more than enough this year to warrant some love on this team. Only a one year starter, Colon made the most of his time and lead his Wave to a state title appearance for the first time in over 20 years.

Division I Honorable Mention

Due to only selecting two All-State teams per division and the talent spread, I've decided to select an extensive number of players for honorable mention from DI. Milford's Zach White had an incredible career notching over 200 points.

SKATER OF THE YEAR: Zach White, Sr. (Milford Co-op)

GOALIE OF THE YEAR: Chase Briggs, Sr. (Daniel Hand)

DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR: Conor Scharlop, Sr. (Fairfield Co-op)

OFFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN OF THE YEAR: Colin Bernard, Jr. (Trinity Catholic)

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Will McEwan (North Branford)

COACH OF THE YEAR: Ken Smith (Trinity Catholic)

RYAN BRENNAN ALL HEART AWARD: Joe Cullinan (Wilton)

Wilton captain Cullinan always stood out in terms of compete level. A described "rink rat", Cullinan will bring that work ethic to the Marines. A teammate described Joe as "A person with true character, a leader, and someone who will always be there for others." Joey, you should be commended as a man and a leader and I wish you all the best.

Ryan Brennan All Heart Award given out each year to players at all three divisions. Brennan, a Fairfield Prep Jesuit lost a two year battle with cancer in February 2011. It was suggested by Prep players last season that we honor the life of Ryan with this annual award given out to players who exhibit excellence on and off the ice.

DII FIRST TEAM

F Tyler Hackett, Jr. (Branford)

Hackett had a fine season for a strong Hornets squad. Without fellow junior Tyler Criscuolo for large parts of the season, Hackett, often injured, performed admirably, never taking a shift off. He finished the year with 62 points (30 G, 32 A).

F Zach White, Sr. (Milford Co-op)

White has been the back bone to Milford Co-op each of the last two seasons. He double shifts nearly every game, plays in all phases and can make defensemen look down right silly. A 200 point career scorer, White notched his third straight 50+ point season finishing with 48 regular season points (30 G, 18 A). White also posted 8 points (5 G, 3 A) in three tournament games.

F Adam Shea, Sr. (Amity)

Speed, speed and more speed. Shea simply blows by the opposition. Similarly to Hackett, Shea's Spartans were dealt a potentially lethal blow when senior captain Keating Seymour went down with a collar bone injury. Shea with help from Brett McNeil and Kevin Ryan took charge. Shea finished with 12 points in four games during Amity's tournament run and finished the regular season with 56 points (31 G, 25 A).

D Johnny Uscilla, Sr. (Amity)

Uscilla defines a defensive leader. His offensive numbers will never jump off the page but his game management is top notch. Uscilla will be sorely missed on the blue line for the Spartans. His competency allowed the Spartans' top line to flourish.

D Conor Scharlop, Sr. (Fairfield Co-op)

Speaking of dependable, no one at the D2 level has had such a dependable career as Scharlop. For coach Mark Pettorini leaning on Scharlop has been something special. Scharlop is probably a more well rounded D-man than Uscilla with way more offensive upside but it would be fun to see these two paired together. Great career for this young man.

G Chase Briggs, Sr. (Daniel Hand)

Selfishly, I'll miss watching Briggs man the pipes. His at times unorthodox means of stopping a puck always made him stand out in a crowd. Few goalies at any level in the state could change games the way Briggs could. Briggs posted three shutouts this year and a 2.37 GAA.

DII SECOND TEAM

F Ben Solin, Jr. (Daniel Hand)
Solin had just as good of a year of any player in the state and could very easily be sitting on the first team. The Phillips-Exeter bound junior finished the regular season with (32 G, 28 A). He also added on 9 goals during Hand's improbable title run.

F Jake King, Jr. (Suffield-Granby-WL)
Without a conference and hidden away from the hockey hotbeds it's hard to hear about the on ice exploits of King, a talented Wildcat junior. King finished the year with 47 points (26 G, 21 A) and lead a young SGWL team that should be strong next year.

F Dan Roberts, Sr. (Newington-Berlin)
Roberts came on board last year for Newington-Berlin and made a big splash right away helping the Indians win a DIII title. This year, his value was immeasurable with the co-op exploring the DII ranks. Roberts finished the year with 46 points (22 G, 24 A).

D Brian O'Connell, Sr. (East Catholic)
O'Connell was a rock for East Catholic this past season on the back end. On a team with hit or miss stars each night, O'Connell was the one constant for the Eagles and their ability to land the #1 overall seed in the DII tournament. He was able to chip in on the offensive end with 25 points (5 G, 20 A).

D Hunter Byram, Sr. (BCR)
Byram had a great final year for BCR bolstering a near impenetrable defense most of the way. Byram added on 25 points (8 G, 17 A) of his own aiding the co-op in their first season at the Division II level.

G AJ Brink, Jr. (Branford)
The coach's kid was as reliable as he could be this year between the pipes for an SCC/SWC D2 Champion Hornets squad. Brink finished the year with a 2.09 GAA and a .933 save percentage. He's poised for a stellar senior season.

These three will graduate and move on from Woodstock Academy but their impact will be felt for years. They are pioneers and hopefully, if Woodstock does well, they can look back and realize their vitality in kickstarting this program’s first varsity season.

DIII FIRST TEAM

F Jack Mendillo, Jr. (Staples-Weston-Shelton)

Mendillo followed up a strong sophomore season with an explosive junior campaign. On an often outmanned Wreckers team, Mendillo poured in 47 points (27 G, 20 A). He was able to notch multi-goal games 11 times and tallied at least two points in all but three games this year.

F Shane Dushay, Jr. (Masuk)

Dushay ran off a 30 point sophomore season which was a hard act to follow. He eclipsed that point total and more leading Masuk to the #1 overall seed in the D3 tourney. Dushay finished with 40 points (25 G, 15 A) on a team with a ton of offensive options.

F Ross Brancati, Sr. (EO Smith-Tolland)

Brancati was such a hard-nosed work horse for the Bucks this year, continually battling in the corners while still piling up the points. His production will certainly be missed but it’s his cult hero status in Bucks Nation that may be harder to replace. Brancati finished the regular season with 37 points (18 G, 19 A).

D Christian Suda, Sr. (Masuk)

Suda finished up his final year with the Panthers as a leader, a stalwart defensive presence and capable player in all phases. Suda notched 16 points (4 G, 12 A) this year from the blue line.

D Jonathan Lovorn, Sr. (Newtown)

Lovorn could be used in every role on the team. His inclusion as a forward on the CIAC All-State team is indicative of that. Lovorn was the bread and butter that Newtown relied on this year. He finished with 34 points, including an impressive 21 goals.

G Matt Schoen, Jr. (EO Smith-Tolland)

Schoen was incredibly strong for the Bucks all season. His dependability was needed at times while an excellent security blanket to have at others. The junior finished with a .932 save percentage and a 1.79 goals against average.

DIII SECOND TEAM
