Wednesday Recap & Scoreboard

By: Luke Devoe

Sheehan and Housy Skate To A Tie
I had the privilege of freezing my tail off at Choate last night watching what turned out to be tale of two different games. Sheehan utterly dominated the Mountaineers of Housatonic-NW-Wamogo for upwards of two and a half periods. They got first and second period goals from Sal Gozzo and Christian Giacondino. They had plenty of chances to expand their lead and Housy really wasn't peppering the net at the other end, ending the second period with just around 10 total shots. Then, be it complacency or overconfidence, the Mountaineers crept back into it. James Hufton scored with 1:30 left in regulation followed shortly by Andy Shepard notching only his second goal of the year on a wrister from between the circles with only 28 seconds left. The two teams conservatively skated to a tie in an overtime period that saw Housatonic generate better chances. I think Sheehan is the better team with more apparent weapons. Players like Mike Cerrotti, Mike Capozzi and the aforementioned Giacondino and Gozzo move the puck well and can pick spots. The Titans will get a big shot in the arm when the Beaudoin brothers are eligible in a couple of weeks. Housatonic's top group of Wes Reel, Hufton and Jason Diamond were fun to watch but after that there is a certain drop off in talent.  Eric Chin ended up having a fantastic game in net for the Mountaineers and handled these weapons with care to the tune of 32 saves. Both teams can win a first round D3 tourney game but are still a few leaps behind the top group of D3 squads.

- Ben Solin notched his second consecutive hat trick and added four helpers as Daniel Hand (4-5) trampled BBD (1-7) 8-1.
- West Haven (5-3) took a 2-1 lead into the second period against Fairfield Prep (6-2-1) until the Jesuits exploded for 6 unanswered goals. Matt Wikman (2 G, 2 A), Dean Lockery (2 G, 2 A) and Kenny Kochiss (1 G, 4 A) lead the charge for the Jesuits.
- Staples-Weston-Shelton (5-3) became the first D3 team to top a D1 team by beating Greenwich (1-6) 4-3 last night behind a two goal effort from stud forward Jack Mendillo.
- Hamden (4-2) crushed South Windsor (2-6) 7-0 at the Lou last night behind a hat trick from senior captain Anthony Rascati who also added an assist on the night. Freshman Jeremy Routh added a goal and two assists for Hamden while junior Logan Cathey posted a 15 save shutout in his first action of the year.
- Simsbury (5-3) topped Xavier (3-5) 4-1 last night. The Falcons scored 30 seconds into this tilt but that's all they'd get. Simsbury was aided by two shorthanded goals coming from Hunter Chapman and Ben Levin.
- Hall-Southington flexed some muscle upsetting D2's BCR 4-3 in overtime last night. Hall sophomore Jarod Florian had a monster four point (1 G, 3 A) game. Junior goalie Erich Bender finished with 40 saves for Hall.
- Newtown and NFI skated into overtime without a goal being scored. Newtown left the rink with an overtime victory. Patrick McLoughlin finished with 35 saves for Newtown while Ryan Dobos turned aside 30 for NFI. Zach Waller notched the OT winner.
- New Milford (6-1) posted arguably the most impressive win of the night beating D2 #1 North Haven (7-2) 3-0. Harrison O'Connell led the Wave charge by collecting all three New Milford goals on the night.
- Cheshire (5-4) looks like a new squad winning their fourth in a row 3-0 over North Branford (4-3). Senior Luke Vendetto potted two goals in the victory while senior net minder Joey Solla posted his first shutout of the year.
- Northwest Catholic and Newington-Berlin have a way of playing thrilling hockey when they are paired against one another. Last night was no different. NWC took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission only to be matched by Newington-Berlin. The two each potted a goal in the third and ended up tied at the end of the overtime frame.  Dante Gugliotti had two goals for Newington.
