Interdivision Records

With the season more than halfway over, I thought it'd be interesting to take a look at how each division was doing against each other.

Tonight, Newington/Berlin beat Windsor/Farmington/Avon, becoming only the second Division 3 team to top a Division 1 team this season.  The other was Northwest Catholic topping Simsbury earlier in the season.

DIVISION 1
vs. D2: 38-6-2
vs. D3: 12-2-0
vs. out of state: 11-8-1
Combined: 61-16-3

DIVISION 2
vs. D1: 6-38-2
vs. D3: 35-13-1
vs. out of state: 4-0-0
Combined: 45-51-3

DIVISION 3
vs. D1: 2-12-0
vs. D2: 13-35-1
vs. out of state: 6-2-1
Combined: 21-49-2

Right now Division 3 squads Shepaug/Litchfield/Nonnewaug (0-10-1), Fitch/East Lyme/Ledyard (0-9-0) and Immaculate/New Fairfield (0-9-0) are the only winless teams in the state.  Fairfield Prep (8-0) is the only team undefeated against in state opponents.  They are 3-2 out of state.

CTHS Hockey's Top 10 1/30

January 30, 2012
By: Luke Devoe

This week sees the top four stay the same while great shifting occurs a bit lower.  South Windsor seems to have been exposed and will need to step their game up after two bad losses.  Darien and New Canaan enter the rankings after continued impressive streaks.

1.
Fairfield Prep (11-2-0)- Prep won the inaugural Jesuit Shootout at the Prudential Center in New Jersey this past weekend and added a beatdown of Cheshire to go 3-0 on the week.  David White and AJ Unker are as steady as they come and with the defensive brand they've been playing (allowed only two goals in three games this week, including a shutout of perennial power BC High of Mass) Prep is the easy favorite to win state this year.
PAST WEEK: Cheshire W 5-0, Boston College High W 2-0, St. Peter's (NJ) W 3-2
2. Ridgefield (11-1-0)- The Tigers keep rolling and have run off 11 straight wins following a season opening loss to Prep.  They took care of a couple of cupcakes this week, though I'm sure they would've liked a little more separation against Warde/Ludlowe than a one goal game.
PAST WEEK: Trinity Catholic W 6-2, Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe W 3-2
3. Notre Dame-West Haven (11-2-1)- Not an easy week for the Knights and they responded admirably demolishing an overmatched East Haven squad and matching Hamden step for step in the state's best game of the year on Saturday.
PAST WEEK: East Haven W 5-0, Hamden T 3-3

4. Hamden (7-3-1)- If it wasn't for Notre Dame opting to go with Luc Amatruda in the third period, Hamden would have probably won on Saturday.  Hamden is getting scoring from all over the roster and at all different times including two shorties on the same penalty kill from sophomore Jeremy Germain and freshman Tyler Carangelo on Saturday.
PAST WEEK: Notre Dame-West Haven T 3-3
5. Glastonbury (8-2-0)- If it wasn't for a weak third period against NDWH, the Tomahawks could be looking much mightier at this point in the season.  The boys have skills regardless and received goals from six different skaters in a hard fought win over Conard this week.PAST WEEK: Conard W 6-5
6. West Haven (8-3-0)- West Haven took out some serious frustrations after the Prep blowout by tallying 9 goals against Milford this week while also getting a hat trick and five point game from senior Mike Troiano.  Took care of business against Amity as well.  They seem to be fine.
PAST WEEK: Milford Co-op W 9-2, Amity W 5-2
7. East Haven (9-2-2)- After gathering quite a few D2 wins early in the year the Yellow Jackets needed a good showing against the Knights, they didn't get it.  However, they put together a complete game against borderline D1 opponent Windsor/Farmington/Avon.
PAST WEEK: Notre Dame-West Haven L 5-0, Windsor/Farmington/Avon W 3-1
8. New Canaan (8-3-1)- The Rams are 6-0-1 in their last seven and have outscored their opponents 37-7 during that span.  Circle the date Wednesday night when they take on the #2 Ridgefield Tigers.
PAST WEEK: Notre Dame-Fairfield W 4-0, Greenwich W 3-1
9. Darien (8-3-0)- Like New Canaan, Darien carries quite the win streak heading into this week.  The Blue Wave has run off seven straight after starting the season 1-3.  They, too, have a tough matchup Wednesday night against St. Joseph as the FCIAC tries to dethrone the SCC as top ice hockey conference, they have a long way to go however.
PAST WEEK: Staples/Weston/Shelton W 8-0, Norwalk/McMahon W 9-2
10. Xavier (7-4-2)- Xavier still needs to take off.  They pulled out a tight victory over North Haven on Saturday.  They'll have a chance to announce their presence as they take on the #1 Jesuits Wednesday at the Wonderland.
PAST WEEK: North Haven W 2-1

Dropped Out: #5 South Windsor, #10 Guilford
On the Bubble: St. Joseph (9-4-0), South Windsor (8-4-0), Daniel Hand (6-4-1)

Catching Up (Some Recaps)

1/25 Fermi/Enfield 3, #5 South Windsor 2
Nick Varner scored 1:43 into overtime to allow Fermi/Enfield to upset #5 South Windsor Wednesday night.  With the win Fermi/Enfield moved to 6-6-0 on the year while the Bobcats fell to 8-3-0.  South Windsor received a 34 save effort from senior Christian Marchi in the loss.

Fermi/Enfield upset #5 South Windsor Wednesday 3-2 in overtime.
1/25 #3 Notre Dame-West Haven 5, #6 East Haven 0
Captain Colby Cretella recorded a hat trick and added an assist while Bill Vizzo added four assists as NDWH proved their might with a convincing 5-0 victory over East Haven Wednesday.     NDWH improved to 11-2 while East Haven fell to 8-2-2.

1/25 #2 Ridgefield 6, Trinity Catholic 2
Sean Wilkinson tallied two goals to guide the #2 Ridgefield Tigers to victory over Trinity Catholic Wednesday.  The Tigers now move to 10-1-0 on the year and haven't lossed since early December when they opened the season losing to Prep.

1/25 #7 Glastonbury 6, Conard 5
The Glastonbury Tomahawks received six goals from six different skaters and staved off an upset bid by an up and coming Conard squad.  Glastonbury clinched a spot in the tourney and moved to 8-2-0 on the year while Conard dropped to 4-8-0.

1/25 Cheshire 4, #10 Guilford 0
The Cheshire Rams were able to stave off a season sweep by the #10 Guilford Indians with a 4-0 shutout.  Tyler Carbone made 27 saves and the Rams got two goals and an assist out of Tyler Murgo in the win.

1/26 #1 Fairfield Prep 5, Cheshire 0
David White continued his onslaught on the state scoring four times to lead the top seeded Jesuits to an easy 5-0 win over the Cheshire Rams.  Cheshire goalie Tyler Carbone, who's been one of the state's best, performed well enough to give the Rams a fighting shot with 40 saves.  Prep moves to 9-2-0 on the year while Cheshire falls to 6-5-0.

1/27 #1 Fairfield Prep 2, Boston College High 0
#1 Fairfield Prep topped the proud program that is BC High 2-0 in the first round of the Jesuit Shootout at the Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils in Newark, NJ.  Dynamic duo David White and AJ Unker scored the Jesuits lone goals and goalie Riley Wikman stood on his head in the shutout effort recording 38 saves.  Prep will move on to face St. Peter's Prep from Jersey City, NJ on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the tourney's championship game while BC High will take on Canisius Prep (NY) in the consolation.  St. Peter's is ranked 10th in the not so hockey rich New Jersey prep circuit.

#3 Notre Dame-West Haven trounced #6 East Haven 5-0 Wednesday night at Bennett.

8 Elite Predictions: Mark these on the calendar: (Season 6-5, Last Week: 1-2, stupid snow)
1/26 Cheshire @ #1 Fairfield Prep 1:00 @ Wonderland of Ice
No one plays tougher than Cheshire and have only been outscored by six goals in their four losses.  Expect them to keep this close, but with the Unker/White firepower and the steadiness Wikman is providing in net, the Jesuits should coast to victory.  Prep 4, Cheshire 1

1/27 #1 Fairfield Prep vs. Boston College High 5:30 @ Prudential Center, NJ
The home arena of the New Jersey Devils welcomes Connecticut's best against the #2 team in Massachusetts according to the USHSHO rankings.  Prep is undefeated against in state competition and went 1-2 earlier in the year with their lone win coming against fellow Mass power Springfield Cathedral.  Prep is riding high but I think BC High takes this one. BC High 4, Prep 2

1/28 #3 Notre Dame-West Haven @ #4 Hamden 2:30 @ Lou Astorino Rink
NDWH dismantled East Haven on Wednesday proving they are right up there with Prep in the SCC.  Hamden has been a tough team to read this year, losing to Mass powers Hingham and St. Johns, Shrewsbury as well as Fairfield Prep while at the same time beating all the teams they are supposed to beat.  The Lou will most likely be sold out and rocking.  Hamden will take this one.  Hamden 3, NDWH 2

1/28 #9 Xavier @ North Haven 7:30 @ Northford Ice Pavilion
Xavier needs to start adding up some quality wins and while North Haven isn't a top tier D1 squad, the Falcons can't afford to lose this one.   Xavier 5, North Haven 4

2/1 #9 Xavier @ #1 Fairfield Prep 6:00 @ Wonderland of IceXavier definitely has the firepower to hang with Prep but if someone in state is going to knock the Jesuits off their pedestal it's not going to be Xavier.  Prove me wrong Falcons. Prep 5, Xavier 2

2/1 #10 Guilford @ Conard 7:30 @ Veteran's Memorial Ice Rink
Conard is a very interesting team.  They've beaten South Windsor and Fermi/Enfield and most recently almost pulled off a huge upset losing to Glastonbury 6-5 but they have also allowed some unsightly goals against numbers.  7 times this year Conard has allowed 6 or more goals.  Guilford comes in after being beaten 4-0 by Cheshire.  They've gone 2-2 against D1 opponents this year and could very well move to 3-2 after this one.  Guilford 7, Conard 4

2/1 New Canaan @ #2 Ridgefield 8:30 @ Winter Garden Ice ArenaNew Canaan has played better of late and have looked more like the Rams of last year.  They have a five game unbeaten streak but are running into Ridgefield who has a 9 game winning streak working for them.  Ridgefield may be the best team in the state not named the Jesuits and they should continue to roll here. Ridgefield 3, New Canaan 1

2/1 Darien @ St. Joseph 8:30 @ The Rinks at Shelton
Two teams who should make the D1 tournament and could crack the top ten very soon.  This game will go a long way in determining that and giving them confidence going forward.  I see Darien continuing it's recent streak of hot play.  Darien 5, St. Joseph 3
