CTHS Hockey's Top 10 1/23

January 23, 2012
By: Luke Devoe

What looked to be a very exciting week of Connecticut High School Hockey turned into a boring weekend filled with cancelations due to the snow.  The rankings reflect the games that were played this week.
1.
Fairfield Prep (8-2-0)- Another dominant win over a top ten squad as the Jesuits dismantled a good West Haven squad last week.  This team could be the state's most dominant team we've seen in recent years but will get a definite test on Friday against Boston College High at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.
PAST WEEK: West Haven W 8-1
2. Ridgefield (9-1-0)- Beating top notch teams and easily taking care of lesser squads is the mark of a true quality team.  They shouldn't be challenged until South Windsor next week however.
PAST WEEK: Stamford W 6-0, Greenwich W 5-2
3. Notre Dame-West Haven (10-2-0)- Got a scare from a good Tomahawk squad last week but pulled out the big win with ease thanks to a hat trick from Colby Cretella and four third period goals.
PAST WEEK: Glastonbury W 5-2, Trinity Catholic W 6-2
4. Hamden (7-3-0)- Started off the Lancers' Roos-less era with a beatdown thanks in large part to a hat trick from junior Bill Reilly.  It all may come to a head Saturday, however, when the Dragons take on their rival Knights from
NDWH.
PAST WEEK: Notre Dame-Fairfield W 5-1
5. South Windsor (8-2-0)- An off week after the monstrous matchup with Glastonbury was postponed.  The Bobcats are in great shape with some very winnable games in the near future.
PAST WEEK: Off
6. East Haven (8-1-2)- A watered down schedule only works in your favor if you win the games you need to.  A tie against D2 Daniel Hand does not carry much weight.
PAST WEEK: Daniel Hand T 5-5
7. Glastonbury (7-2-0)- Only moving up because of the potential they showed in periods one and two against the Knights.  Something about this team seems like they'll win some big games this year and senior captain Ethan Holdaway's speed is truly impressive.
PAST WEEK: Notre Dame- West Haven L 5-2
8.
West Haven (6-3-0)- That one hurt a bit.  No one was more upset to have their Hamden game cancelled on Saturday than the Westies who desperately needed redemption after the egg they laid against Prep.  Not an easy tilt on Wednesday against D2 Milford Co-op.
PAST WEEK: Fairfield Prep L 8-1
9. Xavier (6-4-2)- Still no big win for the Falcons.  Played to a tough 1-1 tie against New Canaan.
PAST WEEK: New Canaan T 1-1
10. Guilford (7-1-0)- The top team in D2 cracks the rankings.  They haven't lost since December 17th while running off 7 straight wins including two against D1 opponents.  Looking for their season sweep of Cheshire.
PAST WEEK: Fermi/Enfield W 2-1

Dropped Out: #10 New Canaan
On the Bubble: New Canaan (6-3-1), Darien (6-3-0)

On Thursday we will provide a new "Elite 8 Predictions" as ours were interrupted this week.  So we will only have three this past week, Hamden @ ND-Fairfield, East Haven @ NDWH and Guilford @ Cheshire and I am already 1-0 on those.  Wednesday has a trio of quality games to look forward to with the aforementioned Yellow Jackets heading to Bennett to take on NDWH at 4 p.m.  That game will be followed by a quality Milford Co-op squad taking on a struggling West Haven bunch at 6:30 p.m.  Also on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. D2 power Guilford looks for the season sweep against Cheshire at Wesleyan University Rink.  Check the blog and our twitter @CTHSHockey for score updates and more.

Our schedule for the week:
1/25
#6 East Haven @ #3 NDWH @ 4:00 Bennett Rink
Milford Co-op @ #8 West Haven @ 6:30 Bennett Rink

1/28
#3 NDWH @ Hamden @ 2:30 Lou Astorino Rink
#9 Xavier @ North Haven @ 7:30 NIP
